History and Structure

Established in 2005, ProClass was set up in response to cotton growers and merchants wanting a truly independent classing service. Goondiwindi was chosen as the site for operations as it is a major regional centre which is located at the junction of several major highways servicing the Australian cotton belt, and within a 250 km radius to the bulk of the industry's ginning capacity.

The establishment of ProClass has resulted in a rationalisation of classing services in Australia, meaning we have seen a move away from the many merchant owned facility towards there now being only three classing facilities nationwide. ProClass is the dominant entity, with a national market share of approximately 70%.

The shareholding of our business is drawn from several cotton industry sectors:

  • arrow-up-right 40% Cotton growers - who are represented by a group of six growers from six cotton regions from Central Queensland to the Macquarie Valley encompassing:
    • arrow-up-rightHamish & Mary McIntyre (St George/Dirranbandi)
    • arrow-up-rightGeoff & Toni Hewitt (Darling Downs)
    • arrow-up-rightThe Corish Family (MacIntyre Valley)
    • arrow-up-rightThe Cush Family (Gwydir, Namoi, MacIntyre Valleys and South West Qld)
    • arrow-up-rightJono & David Phelps (Namoi Valley)
    • arrow-up-rightThe McAlary Family (Macquarie Valley)
  • arrow-up-right40% Cotton merchants - represented by Louis Dreyfus Cotton Commodities and Queensland Cotton;
  • arrow-up-right20% Cotton classers - represented by an independent international cotton controller and classing firm - Wakefield Inspection Services - which has existing interests in cotton classing and controlling all around the world; and ProClass management.

The structure of our company is specifically designed so that no one shareholder or shareholder group has a controlling stake in the business. This means that all classing decisions are made unencumbered by bias or coercion.

ProClass is Australia's leading fully independent cotton classing operation. We operate a large-scale modern cotton classing facility servicing Australian cotton growers and merchants. Located at Goondiwindi, Queensland, the facility is right in the heart of Australia's traditional cotton belt. At present, ProClass classes approximately 70% of the cotton produced in Australia.

Our mantra is "Professional Independent Classing" and that is exactly what we provide. This is done with the help of a team of industry professionals with long term domestic and international experience, a fleet of the most up to date cotton testing equipment (HVI machines), a state-of-the-art humidification and environment conditioning system and a pro-active, forward-thinking Board of Directors.

ProClass is a full participating member of the Cotton Classer's Association of Australia (CCAA). We are fully compliant with the CCAA's Best Management Practice for cotton classing and have been since that program's inception.

In 2016 the Goondiwindi facility was accredited under the International Cotton Association Laboratory Certification Scheme.

The ProClass service is open to all cotton growers and merchants.
